Record Store Day is the third Saturday of April. It's a day to celebrate music, especially independant music and music stores.
The first Record Store Day was in 2008. Since then, artists have traditionally released limited edition vinyl records every Record Store Day. Over 400 releases were made for today.
Some of my favourite artists made Record Store Day specials, including Arcade Fire, Regina Spektor, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Beach House, and The Flaming Lips.
The most anticipated (by me, and many others) was The Flaming Lips' release "The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends" - a double vinyl featuring a bunch of artists collaborating with the Lips, including: Bon Iver, Chris Martin from Coldplay, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Nick Cave, Neon Indian, Plastic Ono Band, and Ke$ha.
Our record store was only getting two in and it was first come, first serve, but my boyfriend got one!
The cases are done with some kind of laser printing or something and each one is unique.
(This is a still from this video, where Wayne Coyne talks about the record.)
The vinyl is all unique, too...and super beautiful! (these aren't Stephen's, I just found this online)
He also got the Beach House release, Lazuli:
and the Gorillaz' release, Do Your Thing!
All in all, a pretty successful Record Store Day!
