Book Recommendations #2

Back in May I made a blog post with a picture like this recommending books for if you like The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, The Fault in Our Stars and The Great Gatsby. 
It was fun and some people liked it. It got a good response over on Pinterest.

I made a new one for what you should read if you like Divergent, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Book Thief, and Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire)

5 Things I'm Obsessed With Right Now


1. Beyonce Like I said in my last post, I have been obsessed with Beyonce's visual album since Christmas. I have also been digging the series of videos she's been releasing on youtube explaining her concept for the album, the process, and what it means to her.

My favorite is this one where she talks about the theme of imperfection on the album, referencing Pretty Hurts and ***Flawless in particular.

2. Frozen
I love this movie! It is amazing.  Stephen and I went a couple weeks ago over the holidays and we both loved it and then I saw it for the second time last weekend with some girlfriends, and Stephen bought me the soundtrack.
I don't want to say too much in case people haven't seen it but it is so great. If you loved all the Disney renaissance movies you will love this one. And if you aren't a big fan of all those princess movies, you might like this one because it subverts expectations. And the music is so good. and it's really cute. and pretty to look at. Just go see it, I love it.

3. Pinterest recipes
I've just been really into pinning new recipes to try lately and getting diet inspiration from Pinterest. (I say diet inspiration to mean inspiration for what to eat, not like..it inspires me to "go on a diet").
Here are some recipes I have tried that I found on there:

  • Fresh Quinoa Salad - I call this one "fresh quinoa salad" to distinguish it from another quinoa salad I make pretty regularly.
  • Chickpea Edamame Salad is another favorite at our house
  • and a couple weeks ago I made these Chickpea Veggie Burgers and they were so good! and very easy to make.
  • I also adapted my vegetarian lasagna recipe from this recipe.
  • I made this Indian Samosa Casserole and it was a pain in the butt to make and just tasted very bland so I won't be making it again.

4. dresses
I have always loved wearing dresses (since I was a little girl) but lately they are all I have been wearing. Wearing a dress with tights or leggings is soooo much comfier than wearing pants (especially dress pants at work) and it's so easy to look put together. Here a couple of new faves:






5. Boy Meets World
I got this for Christmas and it is the best ever.
I've just been watching up a storm. Love that show.

Beyoncé XO Cover with Kyle

My friend Kyle and I recorded a couple covers last week before he had to go back east for school.
We had both been sick over the holidays but we wanted to sing together for fun anyways.

We are both pretty obsessed with the new Beyoncé album and he actually got me a physical copy for Christmas so we did a one-take cover of XO with him playing ukulele.

How To Make Winter Feel More Like Summer

The past week or so it's been about -35°C with a wind chill here.
Lots of people I know are taking off on holidays to warm, tropical resorts and I am a bit jealous.
If, like me, you aren't able to get away and escape the cold, here are some tips for making the winter feel a bit more summer-y.

1. Enjoy indoor plants. One of my favorite summer hobbies is gardening but I obviously can't do that with 4 feet of snow outside so I tend to my house plants during the winter months and it's like bringing summer inside for a few months.
 

2. Wear bright colors and florals. I like to wear colorful scarves and sweaters so that even when I have to layer up and dress warmly I still feel bright and cheerful. There is actually science behind this.

3. Eat fresh fruit and veggies. We all know fruits and vegetables are super healthy. Citrus fruits in particular are great to eat in winter because they are rich in vitamin C which helps prevent cold and flu viruses. But on top of those health benefits, fruit and vegetables actually  make you happier, which is great in winter when SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) strikes. (source)



4. Watch movies that take you someplace warm. Some of my favorites are Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Just Go With It, and The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. The first two are partially set in Hawaii and portions of the last one take place in Greece. When I watch these movies I feel like I am in a beautiful, tropical place. Plus Hawaii and Greece are near the top of the list of places I want to go.

5. Embrace the sun when it does shine. On those rare days when the sun chooses to shine even though it's -40, open the curtains. Soak up that vitamin D. Let the natural light in, and try to remember it when the days turn grey again and the sun sets before you even get home from work.
